About me
I’m Nancy, a French-Canadian based in Brisbane, I’ve been drawing since I was a little girl and always had a strong passion for colors. I studied Visual Art and ended up pursuing a career as a 3D artist in the video game industry in which I’ve been working for almost 2 decades.
Starting in 2017, as a response to a need to create some personal art again, I found myself making a first attempt at a mandala. I was inspired by the beauty found in architectural ornaments, middle eastern art, and henna tattoos. In what was supposed to be a fun little drawing, I ended up finding a way of expressing my internal conflict of being spontaneous and messy while also being disciplined and perfectionistic.
With each mandala, I learned to respect the process, that every step is important, that everything takes time, and that patience is the key. Similar to running, painting mandalas is for me a form of meditation. It keeps me calm, centered and grounded. I try to be in the moment, concentrating on what I’m doing, giving my best but also letting my mind and thoughts go where they want to go without forcing anything. Same as completing a race, finishing a Mandala brings me a feeling of achievement and pride.
I love letting my emotions guide the color palette and my creative mind building those intricate patterns and finding the right spaces for each color to elevate and make those motifs come to life.
As a perfectionist, it’s sometimes hard to let go, but drawing mandalas taught me to accept and embrace the imperfections happening in my art. At first look, my mandalas might look perfectly symmetrical, but if you look closer you will find little errors or mistakes here and there. I learned to welcome them since now I perceive it as a representation of the beauty of human imperfections.
